Finnish films of the silent era of the 1920s did not win international recognition. On the other hand the last silent movie of the 20th century, the cult film Juha by the director Aki Kaurismäki, has been praised all over the world. An unconventional Nordic Film Thursday will present Kaurismäki’s movie in the context of the pioneer period of Finnish film, especially of the work of the first distinctive personality of Finnish cinematography, the director Erkki Karu. The short lecture accompanied by rich visual material will be followed by the film screening.
