Scandinavian countries are fascinating not only with their nature, culture and lifestyle but also when it comes to the number of languages that can be found there. Some of them, such as Danish, Norwegian or Swedish are North Germanic, and therefore close to German and English. Some of them are not even in the Indo-European language family: namely Finnish from the Finno-Ugrian language family. Apart from these big ones, numerous smaller languages can be found in Scandinavia – the Sami languages and Meänkieli, while the languages of the islands also bear their specifics: Faroese, Icelandic and Greenlandic.
With a series of short presentations, the Czech experts of the Nordic region will educate the guests about the languages and some of their most basic phrases, bizarre proverbs or tongue-twisters. There will also be a quiz. Last but not least, each guest will be rewarded with a small thematic gift.
A series of thematic roll-ups will be presented, which will along with this webpage help the guests deepen their knowledge about Scandinavian and North-European languages. The visuals have been designed by the illustrator and graphic designer Eva Holá.
The event takes place at the Faculty of Arts of Masaryk University (Arne Nováka 1, Brno) in the foyer of the Building B.

The event is organized by the Scandinavian House in cooperation with the Faculty of Arts of Masaryk University, with the financial support of the Brno Municipality.
The exhibition and the web were launched as a part of the “Language plurality – support for small languages and cultures” project run between 2018 and 2020 at the Faculty of Humanities of Charles University. The project has been financed from the EEA funds.
