Swedish literary spoils of war from the Czech lands

What happened to the thousands of book from the Czech lands at the end of the Thirty Years’ War? And how can they become a part of the Czech cultural memory again after all these centuries?

We invite you to the book launch of historian Lenka Veselá, Swedish literary spoils of war from the Czech lands (in Czech original: Švédská knižní kořist z českých zemí). The book follows the fates of about 25 000 volumes confiscated by Swedish troops in the years 1645–1648 – from their transport to Sweden all the way to their current rediscovery in more than sixty European institutions.

Evening program:

  • Official welcome of guests by ambassador Håkan Jevrell
  • Opening word by the director of The Library of the Czech Academy of Sciences Magdaléna Vecková
  • Introduction of the book, web portal and project by the author
  • Moderated discussion: Lenka Veselá and Zdeněk Hojda, moderated by Martin Severýn
  • Space for questions from the audience
  • Informal gathering with light refreshments

The book, which was published by publishing house Scriptorium will be available to buy in Czech original.
