ReadNordicFilm: Driving Mum

Jon is a middle-aged man who lives in a remote area of Iceland with his mother. She is a determined woman who is prepared for everything, and so she is also prepared for what should happen with her after her death. Once that moment arrives, Jon, without any hesitation, brushes the corpse’s hair, dresses her up, seats her in the back seat of his old car with his loyal dog Bresnef and the journey to his mother’s final resting place can begin.

To accompany a deceased person on their last journey is naturally a sad matter. Yet the very original, tender and morbid film from the Icelandic director Hilmar Oddsson shows that even such moment can bring a bit of fun and adventure.

We invite you to the Icelandic roadmovie as part of the cycle #ReadNordicFilm

#ReadNordicFilm

Book adaptations and biographies of literary figures are very popular among Scandinavian filmmakers. A new series shows, among other things, how filmmakers approach these challenges. Screenings take place roughly every other month at the Edison Filmhub in Prague and several times a year also at the Art Cinema (Kino Art) in Brno, or in a virtual cinema. Through lecturers’ introductions, we present not only the film itself and its authors, but also the related book titles and place them in the context of Nordic literature and national cinema. In addition to highlighting books available in Czech, we also introduce the public to works that have not (yet) been translated.

The screening is organized by Scandinavian house in collaboration with Edison Filmhub cinema and Art Cinema, distribution company Film Europe and with the financial support of the Czech Ministry of Culture and Prague City Hall.
