Nordic literary salon online: The Century of the New Child

We will start the year 2023 with a literary salon dedicated to texts that are more than a hundred years old, yet still relevant. With the translator from Swedish, Viola Somogyi, we will talk about the newly translated selection from the works of the Swedish educator and thinker Ellen Key, who laid the foundations for pedocentrism – a pedagogical trend that subordinates the goals of education to the individual needs and interests of the child. The book Century of the New Child was published in 2022 by the Portál publishing house.

You can watch the live stream on Monday January 16th 2023 at 8pm on the Scandinavian house Facebook page. The recording will later be made available on our YouTube channel.

Ellen Key (1849–1926), a Swedish teacher, writer and thinker, became particularly famous in Europe in the early 20th century as the author of a treatise on the education of the new generation, The Century of the Child. Recently, there has been a renewed interest in Sweden in her half-forgotten work, and there are attempts to revisit some of her ideas and works from a contemporary perspective.

Viola Somogyi is an editor and translator from Nordic languages, occasionally from German. She studied Czech language and has lived in Scandinavia for many years, later worked in various Czech publishing houses, and now is a freelance writer/translator.

The partner of the Nordic Literary Salon Online is “Translators of the North” – an association of translators of fiction between the Nordic languages and Czech. The event is part of the Scandinavian House’s year-long project “Nordic Literature in the Heart of Europe 2023”, which is financially supported by Prague Municipality and the Ministry of Culture of the Czech Republic.
