Ronia, the Robber’s Daughter, whose adventures would always take our breath away. The Brothers Lionheart whose poignant story never fails to move us to tears. All these charming characters were created by Astrid Lindgren. This year marks the 110th anniversary of the birth of this renowned Swedish author. As children, we often knew her stories by heart, but how much do we really know about the author herself?
Astrid Lindgren’s Week, organized by the Scandinavian House in early June, aims at offering exciting insights into the less known facts of the life and work of the author. You are cordially invited to join us for a discussion, following the release of Lindgren’s War Diaries in the Czech Republic, and discover more about the author’s views on war and about her involvement in animal protection. Astrid, a documentary film from 2015, will be screened as well.

A fascinating look into the life of Astrid Lindgren. This documentary will show you the many faces of the famous childrens books author. Lindgren’s life suddently changed by an unplanned pregnancy and being a single mother, a great sin in the eyes of the contemporary society, she was forced to put her son Lasse into foster care. During World War II, when she worked undercover for the Swedish secret service, she kept a unique war diary, which was later published in book form. In the 70s she began her career as an activist and social commentator. She critically approached the social-democratic government, fought for human and animal rights and against nuclear energy, among others.
