Who’s afraid of Vinterberg? Theatre evening with Another Round

The Scandinavian House in Prague in cooperation with Švanda Theatre put on the stage Thomas Vinterberg’s movie Another Round from 2020 as a part of the Nordic Theatre Evenings project. A moderated debate will follow after the performance – director Thomas Zielinski and actors Petr Stach, Robert Jašków, Jacob Erftemeijer a Tomáš Petřík will attend the debate. Moderated by Magdalena Jírková.

Man is born with half a per mille of alcohol too little to be happy. It is time for change! A cruel Scandinavian comedy.

Four friends, high school teachers (history, music, physical education and psychology) have long ago resigned from their work goals and life dreams. They are burnt-out and lingering in the monotonous stereotype of their daily duties. Until one day, at the 40th birthday party of the youngest of the four, they learn about a peculiar theory of a Norwegian philosopher. It claims that people are born lacking half a per mille of alcohol in their blood. Supplementing will immediately make life more colorful, people will become more self-confident, more creative and generally more satisfied and happy. Due to the stagnation of their lives in the work and private spheres, as well as the persisting resignation to all their life goals and dreams, they decide to verify this experiment in practice. There must be something to it, after all Winston Churchill, Arthur Rimbaud, Ernest Hemingway, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, Jackson Pollock, Charles Bukowski and many others had alcohol in their blood practically all the time. Martin, Nikolaj, Peter and Tommy buy alcohol and breathalyzers and the experiment can begin… It seems that the theory really proves itself! So what about increasing the doses? Logically, all those positive results should become increased. One could even reach the so-called ignition!

The debate will start right after the end of the show in the theatre hall and last from 21:20 until 22:00. The entrance to the debate is a part of the ticket for the whole play.

Both the show and the debate will be in Czech, English subtitles will be available for the show.

Screenplay and theatrical adaptation co-author and director of the Oscar-winning film of the same title, Thomas Vinterberg, is one of the most outstanding personalities of Scandinavian cinematography and drama. He was one of the founders of the Dogma 95 movement and is the co-author and director of, eg. The Celebration or The HuntThe film version of Another Round won the Oscar for the best foreign language film of 2020.

Theatre Evenings or Who is afraid of…?

In cooperation with selected theatres introducing texts of Scandinavian authors, the Scandinavian House has launched a series of Nordic Theatre Evenings. We would like the audience to get a deeper insight into the Scandinavian drama, that might not be as popular as the Nordic crime fiction, but can become similarly addictive. Do not be afraid to start tracking the Nordic theatre in the Czech Republic! Unusual horizons and views of the Nordic landscape guaranteed. No need for skis.

The events are organised as commented theatre performances and consist of e. g. a lecturer’s introduction before the performance or a discussion of a various kind, for example sharing of impressions of the play. The introduction provides information about the author, the performed text and a broader context of the piece, or can even familiarise the audience with the performing tradition of more famous, repeatedly staged dramatic texts. After the performance, there is an opportunity to discuss it together. The Theatre Evenings take place in different Prague and Brno theatres 2-4 times a year, depending on the current programmes.

The events are organized with the financial support of statutory town Brno, Prague City Hall and the Ministry of Culture in the Czech Republic.
