For a long time, monastic libraries, alongside universities, were among the few places where books were collected and read. It was only with the development of the concept of the public libraries that books found their way to the wider public, and the libraries gradually evolved into a space accessible to all. However, its forms and functions continue to further evolve, and especially Nordic libraries currently belong to the most inspiring in the world.
This lecture will take the audience on a journey into the world of various exceptional libraries in Northern Europe, which go beyond the traditional concept of this type of public institution. These are the places where you can borrow not only a novel, but also a sewing machine, a musical instrument, a tent or a 3D printer. Deichman Library in Oslo, Oodi in Helsinki, Copenhagen’s Black Diamond or the National Library of Latvia represent a sophisticated fusion of architecture, multifunctionality and cultural vision. Join us on a virtual tour of libraries in Norway, Denmark, Sweden, Finland and the Baltics, as well as other Nordic destinations linked to literature.
