When it comes to crazy sports, the Finns are unmatched. Swimming in a hole in ice and sauna championships are among the well-known disciplines. But one can’t help but wonder at playing football in mud or melting snow. And that’s not even close to everything. Above all, the Finns are world champions in the long throw, and we’re not talking about the javelin. They compete in throwing anything that’s close to hand – a rubber boot, a mobile phone or a milking stool. Contestants who were successful in the last discipline are sure to do just as well in the cattle-calling competition. And if you’re interested in languages, you might want to check out the championships in speaking Finnish dialects. But if you’re more interested in being around animals, don’t miss out on the mosquito-swatting contests or the sitting in ant-nests contests. Or if you’re more into culture, definitely sign up for the championships in playing an imaginary guitar. And make sure to remember to take your other half to the world championship of wife-carrying.
The lecture is held by Scandinavian House chairperson and Finnish specialist, Michal Švec.
