Exiled to Siberia: Lithuanians by the Laptev Sea

Under Soviet occupation

The Baltic republics were invaded and occupied by the Soviet Union in the year 1940 and soon after began the deportation of locals to the inhumane conditions in Siberia. Fourteen-year-old Dalia Grinkevičiūtė (1927–1987) was among the 18 000 deported Lithuanians. Her writings from the Siberian exile, together with her memories of her life in Kaunas in the 60s and 70s, where she worked as a doctor, were published posthumously under the name Lithuanians by the Laptev Sea. The book offers a unique testimony from this turbulent chapter in Baltic history.

In the talk translator Anna Sedláčková and historian Luboš Švec will present the memoirs in a broader context. The guests will debate Lithuanian history, the Baltic states during World War II and the subsequent Soviet occupation. They will also recommend other relevant books that are available in Czech translation.

Moderated by Josef Miškovský, excerpts will be read by Anežka Soukupová.
