What is life like in Greenland? What was the fate of adopted Greenlandic children? How have the Danish-Greenlandic relations evolved in the past and what are they like today? What can you read about Greenland in Czech?
Our invite to the Greenlandic evening on the waves of the river Vltava was accepted by the Danish author Iben Mondrup. The author grew up in Greenland and her work is heavily formed by the country’s landscape, family-related topics and cultural clashes. We will talk primarily about her autobiographical novel Godhavn (2014) about a childhood in the family of Danish teachers in the town Qeqertarsuaq (Godhavn in Danish) on the Disko island and her trilogy Tabita (2020–2023), inspired by real events about Greenlandic siblings adopted by a Danish pair in the 1960s and brought to Denmark.
Apart from literature and socio-historical topics, we will also touch on Greenlandic traditions and the current political situation. The second host of the event will be translator from Danish Magdalena Jírková, who translated for example Kim Leine’s The Prophets of Eternal Fjord where the Danish and Greenlandic world views clash at the end of the 18th century when a young missionary arrives to the Danish colony in Greenland. The evening will be complete with tips on other books, films and tv-shows that can introduce you to Greenlandic culture.

Don’t forget to bring a sweater, just in case, as the event will be held on a boat. In case of bad weather, the event will be moved below the deck of the ship.
The event is organised by Scandinavian House in collaboration with the festival Authors’ Reading Month, (A)void Floating Gallery and publishing house Větrné mlýny and with the financial support of the Czech Ministry of Culture and Prague City Hall.
