About Scandinavian House
The Scandinavian House is a voluntary civic association (non-profit organisation) established by act no. 83/1990 Code, constituted 20th December 2005 by registration at the Ministry of Interior of the Czech Republic under the no. VS/1-1/62659/05-R.The ID no. is 270 16 188.
The main goal of the Scandinavian House is to present the culture and traditions of countries in the North of Europe in the Czech Republic and to contribute to the mutual cross-cultural encounter between Czech and Nordic people.
History
The Scandinavian House was primarily established by the Danish travelling agency CoDan Agentura in October 2003, as a meeting platform for the Scandinavians living in the Czech Republic. In the outset of year 2005 a group of enthusiastic students of Nordic languages took over the cultural activities and the Scandinavian House was gradually transformed into a cultural, social and educational centre, which is regularly visited by not only Czechs with a profound interest in the countries in the North of Europe (Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania). At the end of year 2005, the Scandinavian House became fully independent and turned into a civic association. The association is located in Dejvická Street 3 in Prague 6. The company CoDan Agentura, which continues to run the Café Nordica as well as the Language School of Nordic Languages, is located in Zlatnická Street 10 in Prague 1.
Activities
The Scandinavian House is run with regard to the fact that there exists no official cultural institute (analogical to The Goethe Institute or The French Institute) that would represent the countries in the North of Europe in the Czech Republic. However, the public demand for such an association (which would provide information about the countries in the North of Europe and organise cultural events with the Nordic background) is relatively high and we try to at least partially substitute the role of an official cultural institute. Bearing this goal in mind we organise art exhibitions, scholarly and popular presentations, film projections, concerts and further topical activities concerning social, educational and enlightenment, among which running of the web-page www.skandinavskydum.cz should be mentioned.
Cooperation
The Scandinavian House cooperates with organisations and institutions with a similar field of interest in the Czech Republic as well as abroad. Our closest partners are the individual Embassies of the Nordic countries in the Czech Republic which support our activities also financially. We also cooperate with the Charles and Masaryk University in Prague, with civic associations the Nordic Society and the Club of Icelandic Fanatics, with the individual Embassies of the Baltic Countries, with the Municipal Library of Prague, with the Prague Cinema Atlas and the Brno Cultural Center (Cinema Art), with the Brno Culture Centre Starý pivovar, with publishing houses, musical platforms ad theatres. Our permanent foreign partner is the Arts Council of South Savo in Finland.
We believe that our programme and activities will win your support and we are looking forward to your visit or cooperation.
